Romeo Roadshow is a miniature-equine assisted engagement program serving memory-care and senior communities throughout Southern California. Our visits are designed to foster emotional connection, encourage engagement, and provide calming sensory interaction for individuals experiencing cognitive decline, social isolation, or communication challenges.
The program focuses on gentle, structured interactions between residents and specially trained miniature horses. These encounters often create moments of recognition, comfort, and meaningful communication for participants.
Romeo Roadshow visits a variety of care environments, including:
In addition to senior care communities, Romeo Roadshow occasionally participates in special outreach visits with children’s therapeutic and adaptive programs, including organizations such as The Painted Turtle. These visits are selectively scheduled and designed to provide supportive interaction for children facing medical or developmental challenges.
Our goal is to reach individuals who may have limited access to meaningful sensory or animal interaction and who benefit from calm, one-on-one engagement.
Arrival and Preparation
The horses are transported to the facilities in a specially equipped van. Prior to arrival, staff prepare a designated indoor or courtyard space where residents are seated in a circular arrangement to allow for comfortable access.
Typical sessions include approximately 20–25 participants. During the visit, the horses are calmly led around the circle and spend individual time with each resident at their seat. Handlers pause with each participant for several minutes to allow personal interaction before continuing. The horses make multiple slow passes around the group so residents can engage more than once if they wish.
This structured format allows residents to participate without needing to move from their seats and accommodates individuals who use wheelchairs or other mobility supports.
Gentle Introduction
The miniature horses are introduced slowly and quietly. Residents are invited — never required — to engage. Many initially participate through observation before choosing closer interaction.
Individual and Small-Group Interaction
Residents may sit beside the horse, speak to it, touch its coat or pet it, or simply remain nearby. Some participants communicate verbally, while others engage through eye contact, facial expression, or physical presence. The pace of interaction is entirely resident-directed.
The purpose of each visit is not performance or entertainment, but supportive connection, comfort, and meaningful engagement.
